Volvo XC60 vs. BMW X3 vs. Audi Q5 : The XC60 Pairs Efficiency, Technology and Style

Compact luxury SUVs are meant to emulate the sporty sedan experience while adding more room for passengers, more versatility and cargo volume in order to properly accommodate families and everything they need to bring along for the ride.

Some manufacturers tend to sacrifice performance, driveability and efficiency in their compact luxury SUVs. The XC60, however, delivers an efficient and powerful package that doesn’t compromise.

Here, we compare the 2022 Volvo XC60 with the 2022 BMW X3 and 2022 Audi Q5.

The 2022 Volvo XC60 offers the best balance between performance and efficiency

Under the hood of the 2022 Volvo XC60, you will find a powerful selection of engines. The B5 and B6 engines use a state of the art four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged engine connected to a 48-volt hybrid system. The combined output is rated at 247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft in the B5. In the B6, the Volvo added a supercharger for a total output that ranks in at 295 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.

For even more power, the T8 powertrain in the XC60 Recharge PHEV model uses the B6 engine and mates it to a powerful electric motor and a high output battery. This powertrain produces 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission channels the power to the four wheels. Buyers may also choose the Polestar Engineered variant that outputs 415 horsepower.

The BMW X3 uses similar base engines. But its PHEV variant only outputs 288 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.

As for the Audi Q5, the most powerful model it offers is the Q5 TFSI e and its performance levels max out at 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. This is much less powerful than the XC60’s T8-powered variants.

The XC60 is also more efficient than its rivals. The XC60 recharge offers a full 50 kilometres of electric range. The Audi Q5 lets you travel only 37 kilometres on electricity and the X3 PHEV is last with 27 kilometres.

The 2022 XC60 offers more style and tech

Inside, the XC60 gets unique Scandinavian styling. That’s something you won’t find in the Q5 or the X3. The XC60 now has an upgraded Android-based infotainment system. This new system interface comes with a voice assistant, unlimited personalization options, and best-in-class navigation via Google Maps and a series of in-car apps.
