Taking On-Road Navigation to the Next Level with the Combination of Volvo's EX90 and Google HD Maps

The Volvo EX90 is the first car of its kind to integrate Google’s HD Map technology. Featuring high-precision lidar, radar, and camera sensors that can detect and measure both close-range and more distant areas, the EX90 offers a comprehensive understanding of its environment when driving.

Furthermore, with Google's HD Maps offering highly detailed information of roadways near and far, it creates an extra layer of safety for drivers by giving them access to a continuously up-to-date map of their surroundings. By doing so, Volvo Cars is continuing their strong collaboration with Google while pushing towards a future of autonomous driving.

“The addition of Google HD Maps in our future car line-up marks an expansion of our strategic collaboration with Google, reflecting our commitment to work with technology leaders,” says COO and Deputy CEO Javier Varela. “Implementing Google HD Maps in our upcoming cars will help us offer our drivers a more enjoyable driving experience and in future contribute to the introduction of safe autonomous driving.”

By leveraging Google's HD Maps, Volvo will be able to combine their industry-leading sensor set in the Volvo EX90 with Google's precise lane-level and localization data to give drivers semi-autonomous features like lane change assistance and Volvo Cars' Pilot Assist.

This data is then processed and utilized by the car's core computer system powered by NVIDIA DRIVE AI Platforms Xavier and Orin. With additional support from Luminar's lidar and Zenseact's software, Volvo can provide a more reliable and secure driving experience with its advanced mapping technology, allowing for safer and more comfortable hands-free driving on select roadways.

“Building on our long history of mapping the world, Google’s new HD map is designed specifically for automakers and provides comprehensive lane-level and localization data that is crucial to powering the next generation of assisted and autonomous driving systems,” says Jorgen Behrens, VP and General Manager of Geo Automotive, Google. “We’re excited to continue partnering with leading automakers like Volvo to improve the safety and comfort of drivers everywhere.”

By leveraging the power of Google's HD Maps, Volvo Cars' EX90 model is revolutionizing on-road navigation and pushing autonomous driving to the next level. With its highly precise lidar, radar and camera sensors combined with accurate lane-level data from Google’s maps, drivers can now enjoy a safer yet more convenient experience while having access to continuously updated information about their environment.

This collaboration between Volvo and Google marks an important milestone in making semi-autonomous features like Pilot Assist accessible for everyday motorists - ultimately helping us realize our vision of safe autonomous driving.
