Software Takes the Wheel: Volvo Cars' New Gothenburg Facility

Volvo Cars has just unveiled a groundbreaking software testing center in Gothenburg, Sweden, underscoring its aggressive push into electric vehicle technology and software innovation. With an initial financial outlay of SEK 300 million, this 22,000-square-meter facility dwarfs its existing centers in Lund, Sweden, and Shanghai, China. Anders Bell, Volvo’s global head of R&D, describes it as a hub for round-the-clock, year-long, global software testing.

Starting off with roughly 100 employees, the center is expected to triple its manpower once it reaches full capacity. Moreover, it will house close to 500 specialized testing rigs and digital environments, a dramatic escalation from the current 200.

Accelerating into the EV Era

As the automotive industry pivots towards software-defined vehicles, Volvo’s new facility is ideally positioned to accelerate the company’s electric ambitions, aiming for a fully electric lineup by 2030. Notable beneficiaries of this focus are the EX90 and EX30 SUV models, which continually evolve via over-the-air updates. Alwin Bakkenes, the company's global head of software engineering, outlines the center's objectives as fostering innovation in everything from core safety features to autonomous driving systems.

This new center synergizes with Volvo's worldwide innovation network, which recently expanded with a Tech Hub in Singapore and has plans for another in Krakow, Poland. As the landscape of automotive technology evolves, Volvo Cars is steadfast in its commitment to leading the way.
